Problems & Solutions
1. Are there any areas where Contar systems could not be used?
No. The range of different systems from single coat sealers to 5-6mm broadcast systems cover any possible applications indoors or outdoors even down to -30°C applications in working freezers. Included in the range are fire resistant systems which have been tested and accepted for use in London Underground Locations.
2. What are the cost implications of using Contar systems?
Contar
systems are all fully developed complete systems from smooth to anti-slip finishes.
On a like for like comparison with other generic resin products Contar systems
are very competitive and, with their rapid cure times, cause far less disruption
to production schedules. Furthermore, the Contar systems may be used in low
temperatures where epoxies and polyurethanes could not be used.
3. Are there taint implications with Contar systems?
Generally, taint tests are carried out with curing resins and food products in a small, closed environment. All types of resins may have problems under these laboratory conditions. In practise, the very short curing period, combined with effective ventilation and extraction ensure that tainting of products by Contar systems is not a problem. Other generic resin systems have such extended curing periods that taint could be a more serious problem.
4. Are Contar systems available with anti bacterial agents?
The Contar MMA systems are fully sealed with no dirt traps in the surface. The MMA resins are resistant to bacterial attack and will not support microbiological growth. In many countries anti bacterial additives are prohibited because it is felt that a proper cleaning regime could be neglected, leading to much more serious problems.
5. Generally, the Contar systems are not as thick as other resin systems. Does this affect the performance or longevity?
Contar's MMA systems are mainly comprised of blends of dense fillers in a resin matrix plus primer and sealer. In practise, the trade secret powder blend formulations, first developed more than 20 years ago, guarantee excellent performance from systems which vary between 3mm and 6mm thick. The resin rich nature of these blends guarantees well above average performance from systems which may be thinner than those of other generic resin types. Furthermore, the unique chemical bonding capabilities plus the total resistance to UV degradation, ensure much longer life and easy refurbishments, even many years after the system was first applied.
6. What are the Health and Safety implications of using Contar systems?
The Contar system fillers are inert, inorganic blends and pose no health risks. The resins have no toxicological problems for operatives and contain no solvents. Whilst being applied, the MMA concentration is less than one fifth of the threshold value based on 8 hours per day, seven days per week exposure. Due to the short curing period, MMA vapours exist for no more than 30 minutes. The cured systems pose no risk to operatives or members of the public.
